You can often hear during our presentations that even an athlete with an ascetic build has a fat store that contains almost infinite amount of energy (enough for 10 Ironman races). If that is the case, why do we need to replenish energy during extensive sport activities?
Because we cannot activate fat stores without carbohydrates, i.e. we cannot exploit the energy from fat without carbohydrates. Carbohydrates can only be stored in a limited amount by our body and if we run out of this fuel, fat burning will stop. (This is hunger.) “Fat is burnt in a carbohydrate fire.” For this reason, carbohydrate is one of the most important components to replenish.
So, is there no fat burning if there is no carbohydrate intake?
Fat is burnt in a carbohydrate fire. Your body can store a limited amount of carbohydrates in the form of glycogen. If it runs out, fat burning will cease. This is hunger. It is an unpleasant state because neither our brain nor even our retina gets any fuel. We become drowsy, our body would like to get some sleep. Therefore carbohydrate needs to be replenished during lengthy challenges. Carbohydrates and oxygen sustain our aerobic energy system If your pulse drops during exercise without a reason, then you are on your way to hunger. However carbohydrates need to be replenished with care because mixing a too dense stomach content will only do harm to your body.
